I went out for lunch today with a friend ( she knows what's happened to me). She told me that recently a large group of vigilantes had turned up in the small village where she lives. They were apparently shouting obscenities very loudly at a young man as he tried to enter his home. They trampled across everyone's front gardens and continued to use foul language. Several neighbours came out to see what was going on. A woman wearing a yellow high vis jacket with a camera then started shouting at the neighbours. The police arrested the young man and took him away. The neighbours all said to the vigilantes we understand what's happened is wrong and he's been arrested and the police will take it from here, but please leave and tone down the language, children in village etc. The woman then shouted film this, the whole village supports p.... etc etc

Obviously no one knows what's happened but surely the man could have been arrested without all the nastiness!! Surely they could just pass information on to the police and leave them to do their job. My friend said they were clearly enjoying themselves

Can't say I'm surprised, a lot of vigilantes use section 24a for a citizens arrest however in places like Scotland where there is no power of citizens arrest vigilantes tend to start screaming and yelling, effing and blinding etc to draw alot of attention to the person. Ironically there are entrapment laws in Scotland that prevent decoy stuff or at least they get lesser sentences due to being entrapped.

I unfortunately got very into watching these "stings" due to the nature of my OHs arrest (England), but came across quite a few in Scotland whereby they were going all out to draw attention to themselves and the person they were there to confront. It usually happens when the person isn't willing to be subjected to interrogation.

im so sick of decoys and vigilantes, they ruin the lives of the innocent family members including children that they fail to protect all in the pursuit of likes, stars and money.

there is clearly something very wrong with people if they willingly do that sort of thing. You tell me they are not getting off on humiliating and distroying peoples lives. For what so they can have their 15 minutes b*****r the consequences for innocent people (I'm talking us the families) obviously what the person themselves did wrong but Surely we the innocent deserve some privacy.

This terrified me at the time. I think it's disgusting that these groups are allowed to intimidate anyone like they do, it's not a protest it's a 'man-hunt', with innocent people being caught up in it.

The law of this country is in place to deal with people breaking the laws not gangs of thugs marching around. They should be arrested and stopped.

As for decoys I think yes 'checks' should be made but the police ought to get out their cosy office and get out on the streets to sort the meyhem happening out there.

Just read two vigilantes were jailed when they humiliated and pinned a guy on the floor, filming it all etc. This chappie was later proved innocent ....... more proof of our point!

Shocking!

I compare this to the next stage up from keyboard warriors on social media. Just been reading numerous posts on Twitter about a report in the Sun that a BBC presenter had been suspended because of paying a teen for obscene photos. There isn't a well-known presenter who isn't now being linked with this by somebody or other who thinks they know who it is. Once the thrill of this kind of conversation wears off, the next stage is joining a group of like-minded people and actually doing something in person ie vigilantes. I liken it to the same psychology as the descent from legal porn to iioc which many of us know so well on here, needing a stronger kick. I have a suspicion that quite a few of these vigilantes would have suspicious things on their own devices if investigated as the idea of hypocrisy or not judging lest you're judged in return probably doesn't cross their minds.
