Hey everyone,

Hope you are all well.

I've just come across a campaign on social media called Dellas Law which, if legislation is passed, may prevent sex offenders from changing their name by deed poll. A quick Google of this campaign shows this it has been going for a couple of years and highlights some interesting statistics and information if anyone is interested in reading more on it. I believe the main purpose/interest/target of this campaign is aimed more towards contact offenders but obviously may affect ALL offenders or those who are on the SOR.

What annoys me so much - it is immediately predicted that a man charged with a sex offence or a P (the media love a nasty label) will go on to reoffend.

it's so so wrong - what chance do they get? It doesn't happen with any other crime - my blood boils....

I defo agree with that, what's the point in allowing people freedom if you're going to forever stigmatise them. I think the answer if to ensure a more robust system in monitoring people rather than not allowing people a chance to start again. Not that I believe every person on the SOR requires it, as we know many will never offend again.

There has been a lot of talk about this on twitter. It seems to be miss informed as their main argument is that changing names allows offenders to get a clean DBS check and evade Police Visors and Probation - But this isn't what happen. Sex offenders have to update authorities within X days of changing it.

BTW if you are interested in following dibates, being part of the conversation, twitter is a great place.m #theknock

In case you haven't read this, LFF has an excellent piece about name changes on the website - https://www.lucyfaithfull.org.uk/featured-news/should-registered-sex-offenders-be-allowed-to-change-their-names-.htm
