Hi I'm feeling very worried about what horror movies my stepson watched when he was 15 looking at illegal child porn too????

Today his Dad mentioned that his son in the past mentioned the horror movie iceberg & he was going to watch Level 5(which he felt were too horrible)He spoke to his son's Mum & apparently her & her partner made a fake letter from bt saying he was watching too many horror movies & they were going to cut off if he carried on!

This all sounds so strange to me & my husband thought he'd told me! To me this was a red flag that my stepson needed to be spoken to & protected from his internet worrying use?!

Im wondering if my stepson is desensitised to extreme violence, porn, etc. Now worries what police are going to uncover from his devices! Already cat b & c when he was arrested in April
Thanks for reading

I would say it could be a trigger, I often thought this about my son. He was always fascinated by the most sick horror films and nothing seemed to shock him...... not saying that anyone who likes horror goes on to look at images of children on line.

BUT did he go down this path because it was so shocking? It's certainly food for thought.....

It sounds like his mother did the right thing in warning him off horror movies. Maybe he was desensitised too.

however, he was only 15 when this happened and watching horror movies is pretty normal teenage behaviour. And his mother addressed it.

Until the police tell you what they've found, speculation like this will not help your mental state, nor your relationship with his dad. I know it is hard, but do your best not to think about things you have no control over.

sending you strength

It's an odd coincidence the Iceberg films have been mentioned because I literally learnt about this today! It's effectively a scale of disturbing movies with the movies at the top things like Child's Play and other mainsteam scary films being rated as the lowest and the worst being the highest. There are many films on it which are banned and sound horrific but with people speaking about them on platforms like TikTok, I can only imagine younger people's curiosity will get the better of them to go find them. I wish people didn't have social media or internet until they were 18! Young minds are so spongey and curious they get exposed to so much damage these days :(

Baffled B, So scary the access children get to horrific online stuff. It must surely effect them forever?I really wonder how their brains & behaviour are affected? My stepson was such an outgoing child when he came into my life at 5 & now he rarely talks or mixes with the rest of the family(even before his arrest.

Im just hoping his gcse results this week are good enough for him to start doing A levels & he can have a life before he's charged.
Ive had challenges with my son too but it appears that he's now doing ok working full time & living with his girlfriend

I can't imagine what it's like for them nowadays. When I was in my last year of school back in around 2008, Facebook was just starting out and to this day I remember seeing things of animals on there which were shared by people that make me feel sick, and people think stuff like that is funny at that age but I didn't. I don't know how kids are meant to function in a society where everyone is attached to a screen, how are they meant to develop social skills and keep their minds from being warped. I'm so sorry for what you're going through and hope for a food outcome for you xx

I think it's so sad how your phone 'has took over', I'm just as guilty changing my phone recently to the latest model and hooked on it, though I don't touch social media.

I have to prompt my grandchildren to take their earphones off and eyes off the screen when I want to talk to them!!!!! And then I'm met with 'hang on let me finish this' by my grandson finishing off a game level, it's ridiculous and very sad.

But it won't go away - it's a massive part of our children's lives and the more older they get the world of all crazy s...t is sitting there waiting for them to easily find.

Baffled correctly said children's minds are like a sponge, so true. I just feel so strongly if this stuff was NOT available our loved ones wouldn't be where they are now..... My son, a lovely man - lead down a downward /life changing destructive path by the internet.

Rant over !

China is now considering limiting young peoples use of smartphones to just two hours a day. Whether they can make it work is another matter, but they have already successfully implemented a limit on the number of hours that children can play video games, so the technology exists to do it.

That's great news and a start to addressing the problem.
