Most people don't go through the parole process. They are released automatically at the half way point and spend the rest of their sentence on licence.

There was a very good programme about it on the BBC recently. The most important factor by far, is how they behave themselves in prison. If they don't cause any trouble, they will usually be let out.

Hi when my son first started his sentence he was given documents to confirm time he'd serve in custody, extended licence then a date he would be eligible to apply for parole.

so I think any release won't be automatic and he'll have to go through the parole procedure.
