Advice needed to apply for bail while waiting for sentence

Hi all
I need some advice regarding appying for a bail. My husband was taken to remand in custody over 1.5 months ago after a trial. We had sentencing date given to us for few days ago from today and they cancelled that date a day before at 4pm because of some issue. They have given a new sentencing date to us now which is after over 2 months which means he will be in custody for well over 3 months waiting to be sentenced.
What are the options when it comes to applying for a bail?
Who need to start the proceeding? The legal aid solicitors we have been given is completely useless and has simply said 'No (can't apply for bail) when we asked her about possibility of bail whilst we wait for sentencing.
Can I apply for a bail?
Can he apply for a bail from the prison?

As far as I'm aware it's the police who apply for bail or remand. My husband was put on bail from the day of arrest for the 18 months until sentencing. Hopefully someone with experience of remand can help x
