I've heard of a few people mentioning floating trials and just wondering what that is, if anyone had one and why it's given and exactly what it is?

Its a trial without a fixed court date or location, so you won't know the exact details until the last minute.

Jeez, heaven help anyone who gets that, would be awful wouldn't it, not knowing where or when, why do they do that and not give fixed dates each time?

I think there's a timeframe of dates between which the trial will (hopefully!) happen and 2-4 weeks rings a bell. That is still potentially a month of constant insecurity which would play havoc on nerves, not to mention being able to make any plans, get time off work etc etc.
