Are there advantages to a name change

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone has experience of this. My person has an unusual first name and common surname which would make him very identifiable if it comes out in the media. We were thinking it may help if he changes his first name. From what I understand he would have to change his name on EVERYTHING - mortgage, bank accounts, etc. That doesn't seem to help myself and my son as he would still be linked to our address even though he doesn't live here anymore. It might help him to keep his job if he doesn't get a custodial sentence. I don't really understand all the implications so I'd be really grateful if anyone has any insights they can offer. Thanks

Hello Hyacinth
It May be worth checking out the unlock website re:Changing your name. We did consider this for similar reasons to yourself however due to the short timescale we had between charges and conviction it would never have been possible. When we were considering the name change we were also informed there is still a possibility the police may still release your original name for court proceedings depending on charges etc. Sadly we still got horrendous media coverage twice, firstly at the plea hearing and then on the day of sentencing. I do believe if the press knew my husband had attempted to change his name they would have sensationalised their article a lot more.

Hi hyacinth,
I had exactly the experience that Katie described. Changed name but police released original name. Two lots of press coverage for plea and sentencing with both names.
however, I know others have done this successfully I think a lot depends on where you live, nature of offence etc.
feel free to pm me if you want to know more
