Sorry for the random post, I have no idea how this works. Son is coming out after serving 14th months, (in about six weeks), with a further 14 months suspended. We have suffered (like everyone else here I'm sure) years of worry about him, and now this worry is reappearing in a different format.

What happens when he is out of prison? What is life like for him, how restricted is it. Can he actually get a job, can he go abroad, what restrictions are there in place, how do we find out about these restrictions and who he has to report to etc. Terrified that he might accidentally not conform to any restriction etc and he will end up where he is again.

Does anyone have any experiences of how they adapt to this new part of this living hell that we are all going through.

Thank you so much for any advice, this forum was a great source of support when we went through the initial problems.

I have not been in this position but I have to say I found the helpline from "unlock" really helpful when I called them about something else.

My partner was released last week. I can't answer some of the question but can answer some.

He will have 3 legal elements to consider.

-License requirements, these are set by his probation officer. If he isn't yet aware of these he should be pushing to meet his Community Offender Manager, via his Prison Offender Manager to find out what these are.

- SHPO requirements, he should already be aware of these as they'd have been given at sentencing.

- SOR requirements, unlike the license and SHPO these are notification requirements only i.e. You have to tell them things but they can't restrict you.

The licence conditions are either explicit restrictions or a requirement to get permission begire doing something.

My partner has been put into hostel, whilst frustrating for us, there is support there for people. From talking to other residents, they've been supported in getting access grants and training. Not everyone is released to a hostel though and I'm not sure what support there is if not or if the support is consistent.

I'm not sure what situation your son is in, I term of age, housing, employment, finances etc. I might be able to point you in the direction as to who he should be talking to for various aspects or charities that might be able to help

We have spent the last week mostly doing admin and getting various accounts and access set up.

One of the things I'd definitely make note of is that he needs to sign the SOR with 3 day of being released. He'll need details of any bank accounts, phone numbers, mobile phones, cars etc he'll have access to. We've visited the police station 3 times to provide various documents as it changed. Be repaired that he'll probably have various meetings to attend.

Hope that helps but please feel free to ask any questions. We were quite well informed in preparation but it was a very nerve wracking time and it still felt very uncertain.
