Our son has been told he has to serve an extra eight months in prison, despite only being a week away from release. Why would this be. Does anyone have experience in this. We are yet to speak to him, but are worried that he's done something whilst in the prison amd has been punished in this way. Is this normal? Can they just add on custodial sentences whilst they are serving? he originally was given 28 months, with 14 to be served inside, but now he will be serving 22 months.

Another terrible setback in this nightmare that we are going through.

Thank you

I did read that they are holding more and more prisoners in custody if they have no accommodation to move into on release....... because of the housing shortages etc.

Carnt really expand on this - just something I read. Seems a bit odd they just add on 8 months without a reason, but doesn't surprise me, they seem to do just do what they like with no explanation. Much like when they are moved from prison to prison - again with no explanation or reasons given.

Did he go through parole?

I am so sorry you and your son find yourself here. I have no experience or knowledge with what has happened in your son's situation, I'm afraid.

But I am wondering if the charities, Prison Reform Trust, NACRO or Unlock may be able to offer some insight into why this has happened. They may also be able to offer support, it may be worth contacting them.

I hope this helps in some way.

I can appreciate how disappointed and anxious you must be, Johnny, and of course you want some answers about this.

There's a paragraph on the Prison Reform Trust website saying you can have extra time added for disciplinary reasons and they give a couple of links for more info - but neither are active. I would recommend a call to one of the helplines mentioned in posts above if you can't speak to your son personally.

Hope you get an answer soon.
