Two days ago we had the knock on the door
they then collected phones, laptops and other devices that connected to the internet
My son admitted to viewing some images and didn't know what lead him to do it even when he knew it was wrong, I'm scared for what the future holds for the whole family. Media, friends, work and the law.
and what lead him to do this!?

So sorry that you have had to join this community.
Firstly you are not alone in being a mother in this situation. Several of us have sons who have gone down this dark road. Often they are isolated & socially immature.
Please use the helpline & they can support & guide you on this horrible journey.
I would also suggest telling a 'trusted' friend who will regularly check in with you without judgement. You cannot keep all this wrapped up inside you as your mind will go off in all sorts of directions of 'what ifs'.
Be good to yourself so you can be strong for him.
Take care

I am so sorry that you find yourself here. I agree with what EBP has said.
I would add, that you may find the following helpful.....
In the 'Understanding Why' section there is a post on surviving the early days written by Rainbowgirl80 . It is definitely worth a read for your wellbeing .
Thinking of you and your son.
