For those of you who are online now, apparently they are talking about the huge delays in the CPS tonight on Radio 4 at 8pm. It will then be on BBC sounds

Thanks for flagging this up - I listened and jotted down a few stats quoted which quite frankly were shocking re backlog waiting for CPS consideration (65,000) in UK alone. The description was 'like a motorway gridlock of human misery', which we know all too well, although of course (and quite rightly) their emphasis was the toll on victims waiting to give evidence.

The state in prisons is dire and it was stated that in Scotland they are already full whilst here in the UK it's imminent. There was talk of prison vans circling the M25 waiting to be told where to deliver their passengers!

There were occasional references to the crimes that would take precedence as they were so serious and sex offences were there which made my heart sink a bit as we know how online offences can be linked with any other kind of sex offence.

One thing though was the idea that a way forward could be like in the USA there are 'problem solving courts' where the emphasis would be on assistance so offenders don't reoffend. Of course our government would probably see that as a 'woke' or leftie idea but apparently when used in some courts they've seen a marked downturn in reoffending for some crimes.

There was talk of 'nightingale courts' but I couldn't quite understand how they worked, also magistrates going back to being able to give higher sentences to reduce the number of referrals to crown court.

It's well worth a listen.
