Currently watching this, going to be interesting and I'm totally with the guy who's saying there has to be more to why he did this and he wants to know more as there has to be more.

Just like with our people, most of the public would say yes guilty, hung drawn and quartered, but the small minority would see there has to be reasons why, yes there definitely are many uncovered reasons why and yet no empathy shown at all towards our people xxx

It's certainly interesting listening to the different opinions. I wasn't going to watch it but have got drawn in.

Yes Ocean, me too, the very different thoughts from the jury. Just shows how character references and such things matter hugely in these cases for the defence and how looking beyond a crime and looking at the person is crucial xx

Oh, and questioning whether the jury system actually works in the modern day!

I agree with everything here, a crime is not a whole person. It guts me how a person stands up in court and all the good in their life has no existence, gone, you are a nothing / only the crime. Only snippets of the goodness might be read out, depending on the judges mood that day.

its an angle I never thought of til my son was arrested - and now i see the other side. My son did very wrong but the crime isn't his while being or character. It's bloody unfair I tell you ....

Two quotes from different people have stuck with me:- one from a x prisoner (not a sex offender) - "some of the nicest and most sincere people I've met in my life have been in prison ".

Second a dear friend who worked in prisons teaching. "I often sat in a room full of men that had murdered, it made me stand back and think "wow I should hate these people, but these are actually nice guys, mostly had a 'reason why they were there' and were not just sick people.

By what I've said doesn't mean there should be no punishment as such and I don't say the evils people do in their life be brushed under the carpet and victims forgot. But our system need an overhaul and change of direction, not just pile people into our heaving prisons, leaving them to rot.

rant over.....

Hi Smile,

I'm in full agreement with you that yes I don't condone these crimes and what my person has/ maybe has done (solicitor strongly recommended not guilty as he didn't know who he was talking to) needs addressing but the person behind the crime needs help too and not just casting into a prison that's overcrowded and mental health not an issue.

I told my person your quotes and they made him smile. He will take time out for anyone at any time and help them before himself. He took a guy on the streets to burger king for food a year or so ago and a hot drink then had no train fare to get himself home. We know our persons and their characters, their little quirks and theiir caring considerate sides, they're not all monsters. My person speaks of the future and says "this is how the world now views me". It makes me so so sad and fearful for the future xx

Hey all,

I'm doing some studying at the moment around juries as part of my final piece before I finish my studies. There's a very comprehensive report which may be of interest to anyone who would like to read more into this: https://www.justice.gov.uk/downloads/publications/research-and-analysis/moj-research/are-juries-fair-research.pdf

It's 14 years old now and I believe the main purpose was to try to look into if there is racial discrimination from jurors but there's lots of information in there.

I hope you're all keeping well, I think of you all often but aren't as active on here much anymore. Xx
