Just watching a programme/debate on prison overcrowding and should people be sent to prison, do prisons actually work in their current form, why aren't rehabilitation alternatives being looked at.

Hi Louise,

It is isn't it,I agree with the fact that other methods need looking at rather than slinging someone in a cell for 23 hrs a day who has maybe mental health and serious other issues going on. They need help and prisons currently don't give it.

Chap in the blue jumper is talking a lot of sense and the presenter is bang on. £48,000 a year to house a prisoner! That money would be better spent on rehabilitating offenders in the community!. If my partner goes to prison he will stop contributing to society. He won't be in his job so won't be paying taxes. Save prison for the most serious crimes! It's been proven that some offenders are just in and out of prison, they aren't getting rehabilitated so prison isn't the answer!

Did you see the guy who wrote in at the end...build more prisons!

I'm sorry, everyone has their opinions but some people are neanderthal.

I'm in total agreement with you Louise on our people not being part of society if they go to prison, also how is life for them and us after prison.

My person is in prison and will get no rehabilitation work whilst in prison as the prison don't offer the relevant course(s).

What he did was wrong and deserves punishment, but throwing him in prison for 14 months has been a complete waste of money/time. As well as paying for him to be in a prison facility, he of course lost his job and as he was the main earner, this has meant I have had to begin claiming UC to try and help ends meet as you can only work so many hours around child care arrangements.

The pre sentence report adviced community order but the judge on the day didn't take this into consideration.

I agree that throwing your partner in prison with no rehab courses is just a waste of money!. Yes it's a punishment but the whole idea is to rehabilitate so on release they don't re offend. My partner has waited over 3 years now since the knock to get to sentencing and it's still not happened . He's not looked at porn since the day of the knock he's that petrified. He's worked the whole time in a pretty well paid job, he does stuff round the house for us all the time and he's always sorting our kids cars out ( he's a mechanic!). And like you say you've had to go on Universal credit so something else the tax payer is paying for and I imagine you wouldn't of wanted to do that but you have no choice!

Also what's the point of all these probation officers taking the time to do pre sentence report for the judge to totally dismiss it and ignore the findings!. I've said it a million times, the justice system is outdated and we need to get rid of judges and not have one out of date old timer deciding to issue what ever sentence they want!
