Quick question.
Are all offenders barred on DBS from both children & vulnerable adults.
We consider our son our son is a vulnerable adult, due to physical disabilities + dyslexia & probable autism . He may need the support of a group for vulnerable adults. Will the DBS exclude him?

Hello, I'm not sure I understand. Is it your son that is under investigation/charged? And he needs the helped of a support group himself or he wants to work in a support group? x
Sadly our son is the offender.
He has always been socially isolated outside of the family, despite similar activities as his brother- scouts, theatrical group etc.
Once an adult it became more difficult to make his own social friendship group.
We tried to get him to join groups for others with physical or learning disabilities but he didn't identify with that.
The question is,does his DBS barring now exclude him from such groups, either as a member,or a volunteer?

A member he should be fine, volunter, depends on the association and what risks. He will not be able to volunter at a under 18 organisation. I would apply for a basic DBS and see what comes up as if its an over 18 organisation it could just be a Basic. Some over 18 organisations don't ask for DBS, depends on the vulnerability of the group.
I work for a social group for adults with disabilities, we had an adult charged with viewing iioc, we actually asked on admission forms if any charges/investigations. He was honest from beginning which helped and we spoke to his parole officer for clarification (and reassurance as was something we had never come across before) and we made a detailed risk assessment for him to join the group. It went to our board for discussion and was 50/50 if we allowed him - we did in the end and had no issues.he benefitted immensely from accessing the group.
However if it did end up in the media we would review the membership again.
It would be down to the individual group (if under 16s I would imagine he would struggle to be allowed access) and I'd always suggest be honest from the beginning if they ask.

To add we never asked for a dbs to join but spoke to parole office to check all information on offence was accurately reported to us and properly risk assessed.
Thankyou for your replies & info.
Another probation appointment today. Only activity this week & then like most agencies, everything seems to shut down for couple of weeks.
Just feel that he is stagnant at the moment. Sat around the house with little drive to do anything. Perfectly pleasant & helpful when asked, but no drive.
We don't want to lead his life as there's bound to be a trip-up further down the line.
And still no SHOPO 10 weeks after sentencing!
