Hi, did anyone else have the problem of how the Police record and report the crime? I thought "downloading and uploading " was enough but they included this term, "making images". This is a purely technical term but when it was reported in the media, people thought it meant he'd gone around making the photos himself. It's so misleading and for us, unhelpful.

Absolutely.

This terminology needs to be changed asap!! It's an obvious term that means something completely different to what it sounds like. ( Why would they continue to use it! ).

This is such a catch all term for offences that can widely differ. It implies the offender has possibly photographed children which is not in most cases. I am sure this was drawn up before the huge increase in online offences & no one has challenged the wording in court.

As far as we know our son' s offences were illegal downloads & we choose to believe that.

All is SHPO conditions relate to digital monitoring, apart from living in an under16 household,or visiting one without knowledge of parents/guardians of nature of offence.

Interestingly, his reccommended statement of disclosure says

'Criminal offence of a sexual nature'. That could be anything!

The media love these catch all statements.

Making really means making a copy of an image, which is what happens when you download itto a device. Taking or production are the legal terms for creating new images. Uploading would be classed as distribution for legal purposes.

When it comes to disclosure, then it makes sense not to be specific about the offence, as that could lead to more problems.
