It's probably because of the long standing convention that social media firms are not legally responsible for the content that they host. They are not publishers.

So the legal responsibility lies with the person who posted the video, not with the organisation. You could probably sue the vigilantes for libel, if they say something that is not true, but GDPR does not apply to individuals.

What you could do though is claim under the Protection from Harassment act. If somebody publishes anothers personal information with the intention to harass them, then action could be taken against that person. However the vigilantes could say they were acting to detect or prevent a crime, which is one of the defences available under the act.

Most of them seem to collect a lot of information on people, including those that don't break the law, when trawling dating sites, social media etc, the sort of things private investigators would collect, but I doubt a single one of them is registered with the Information Commissioners Office. They then go on to share this with other groups or disclose it to the world in their livestreams. Who's going to be able to complain though without repercussions? I just wish they'd pass everything directly on to the police and let them handle it.

As Edel said, GDPR applies only to businesses, not individuals.
