Distribution is a more serious offence. I was told that the benchmark is 2 years custodial but obviously this can be less if they plead guilty etc it will also depend on the category of images found and distributed

It's probably quite difficult to distribute an image, without having possessed it first.

My question would be about the very common practice of sharing links to images. That is widespread, but no actual images are sent, so it doesn't seem to be covered by the law.

I think the whole issue has been complicated by the existence of group chats. Distribution is easier than it used to be, and the law hasn't caught up. Plus phones themselves can store images in the cloud, without the user knowing they are there. Syncing your devices automatically links the image to all your devices at once, which means the image is effectively distribruted across those devices.
