To disclose or not

My son is really focused on employment & is now applying for jobs and has some interviews lined up. Very positive.
My question is at what point does he disclose conviction if not directly asked in application.
He has a prepared letter to hand over when necessary.
He will be doing technical assembly work,so no DBS conflict.
Any advice greatly appreciated.

If his not asked , don't disclose. Only if it's in contact afterwards would he need to and if his lucky and there's nothing in it nobody needs to be told anything
Only say if asked otherwise there is no need
My son has found that they are more likely to ask about why he left his previous job than about whether he has any convictions. The conviction question if it's asked, tends to be asked on the application form. If it does get asked in the interview my son was advised by his PO to ask them to contact the PO for details.
Any suggestions on how to answer ' Why did you leave previous employment' rather than disclosing conviction?
My son was advised by his Visor to say he had gone through a personal trauma.
I'm not sure whether it was the right advise or not though as on the one time he did give that response the interviewers quickly cut him off saying they didn't need to know any further details. He was offered the job but within 3 days of starting, his job was terminated as they had found out about his conviction.
After that he was advised by his PO to take any job he could just so he could leave of his own accord as that would then be his last employer. He's now working in a zero hours contract taking any hours they offer him.

I'm interested to know how an employer is finding out following employment being offered if it isn't disclosed during the recruitment process.
In our case his probation officer notified them even though there was no need to. Makes me so angry
We're not sure how the employer found out. It was either someone feeling the need to report it or information from his previous employer who terminated his contract following sentencing.
Both of these reasons are so unjust. How are people meant to move forward. The actions of Probation Officers and Visors appears to be based on a lucky dip of getting those who are professional and supportive or those with a personal vendetta. It makes me so angry. My husband had a job interview today which went really well. They asked him about his good traits and if there was anything bad they should know about. It wasn't a direct question about convictions so he answered in a sense of 'needing to learn unfamiliar aspects of the role'. It's out of our hands now as we have no idea if further down the line the actual 'dreaded question' may arise. Relinquishing control is a constant battle of the mind.
