Perhaps now it'll sink in. I think many people are kept in prison that don't need to be in there!

The whole system needs to be looked at and modified. As per usual it all boils down to money and it being a sensitive area.

My ex partner was recently just sent to prison for 2 year sentence he had been on bail with restrictions for 2 whole year not on remand it was his first offence also and didn't physically have any contact with a child I feel the sentence has been not just for him but for me and his children also. We thought with prisons being full he would get a suspended sentence. It's hard to believe a prison sentence will rehabilitate him or help in much way. Really can't understand the system to be honest how they didn't feel he needed locking away for 2 year throughout investigation but then court and sentenced to prison it's very baffling to me when the prisons are so full. I get there has to be punishment for committing offences but surely he has been punished by not having access to his children without being supervised until they are adults his offence was in the paper for everyone to see he has lost his job and friends I would say that is punishment really.

The talk about building more prisons really frustrates me. Very, very rarely do we hear about reducing the need/demand for prison places through rehabilitation and the huge number of social issues that lead people there.

Ginluver, indeed it seems that this is a crime that is punished many times over, not just by the legal sentence, but before conviction with bail conditions, and also by social work, by employers, by organisations who no longer allow those convicted to use their services or volunteer with them, by insurance companies who won't insure or charge extra, by other countries who won't let them visit, by friends and family who may disown, by the media who delight in publicising, sensationalising and shaming, and by society at large who shame, ostracise or persecute.

And then there is the person's children, parents and other family who are tainted by association and suffer the same effects

I personally don't believe all these men are as dangerous as is made out, and in any case the SOR and offender management process that are put in place are designed to stop reoffending and protect the public, so there should be no need for all the rest of it.

I found it depressing to read that the politicians answer to this problem is "we will build more prisons". How come other countries prison populations are going down, and Britain's are going up?

They carnt even organise the repair of roads full of potholes, so wouldn't hold your breath for a massive prison build!!!!!

Why not create rehabilitation centres were people can be supported to change their lives to steer them away from crime, an aim to reshape their lives to get them back on track - (for all crimes, not just sex offending). By saying this I'm not saying no one should be locked up, yes prisons are needed.

My son did wrong, yes an element of shock punishment was needed but definitely not the sentence he got. After three years the cogs are beginning to slowly turn as he heads towards the date he can apply for parole.

Up to now he's had nothing in place linked to his crime directly, nothing aimed at changing his way of thinking. This is outrageous and is such a waste of time and cost.

The system sucks, I'm afraid, outdated and totally inadequate, as this news item proves.

Smile through tears I completely understand where you are coming from, the sentence my ex partner got I believe was very harsh first offence no contact with anyone all online and he got a custodial he worked and paid taxes right up till he got his plea date then had to tell work and got dismissed I believe his punishment will be with him the rest of his life without having to go to prison. It has been a sentence for his children and me now having to financial support family on my own. No courses have been offered up to now for him to do whilst in prison not sure if this is meant to happen in there or when they get released to be honest. Not sure what good will come from him going to prison to be honest. X
