Waiting to hear where son has been taken on remand. Do we just have to wait for a phonecall from him? We don't know his prison number. Have tried to locate through
'Find a prisoner' but may take over a week.
How do I know he's ok?
We have accepted that we can do no more but it's really hard.
Any advice on remand,gratefully received.

Hi EBP - please try not to worry, your son will be ok, he'll be safe and looked after. Probably assigned a 'buddy' who will be a friendly face and support as he enters prison.
Time can vary as to when their phone numbers are authorised and you receive a call. It could be a member of staff and you agree to just accepting the call. Your son can then give you his prison number. In my case (my son has been in four prisons) I got a call very quickly within a day or so.
He'll have a lot going on, with various assessments - which include medical checks ie. mental heath and medication will be looked into. Then it's going over the rules etc.
On remand he'll be on a special wing which houses vulnerable prisoners and honest he will be safe, that is their job,( safeguarding and duty of care). To be honest it wasn't a happy time for my son, but it was his first time in any kind of trouble and he was terrified.
Once sentenced they are quickly moved on to another suitable establishment.
i hope this has answered a few questions and I'm sure you'll get responses from other ladies. Can I emphasise - please please try not to worry, he'll be ok. I was in bits at that time, so understand exactly how worried you are. Remember to look after yourself too - he needs your strength. Hug sent Xxxxxxx

Took a while to hear anything. Prison was originally an hour away but then he was moved to over 6 hours away.
First it was a queue for a phone then there were phones in the cells which I presume makes it easier to call.

My son has a phone in his shared cell, but prefers to call me on the corridor phone.
Hi EPB,
I was out of my mind with worry when my son first went to prison. He was taken to our local reception prison and it was grim. He had to submit a list of relatives' phone numbers but they had to be security checked and so it took a few days. Three weeks later he was moved to a different prison, 3 hours away but it feels much safer with better conditions. He has had a single cell since being there and it has it's own phone which he's allowed to use when he likes for 30 minutes at a time. All communication is slow and any request for information has to be submitted by form and takes days / weeks for a reply. He is approaching his 4th month and settling down a little, boredom is the worst thing as he mainly reads books and visits the gym occasionally.
I have done 3 visits now and it gets easier when you learn the system and funny rules. i hope you hear from your son soon, the uncertainty is the worst thing.

Hi, it takes a while. My ex didn't get to make a phonecall, he was never allowed. I had to wait for him to have money put on his prisoner account for him to buy stamps in order to write to me with his prisoner number. Like others have said, he will be safe. This is just the hardest and longest phase until you get the information you need. It's extremely frustrating. All the best to you. X
Hi - has anything moved on yet? I hope you've heard from your son x
Hello to you lovely people. You are the only ones who truly understand.
We got a phonecall today, but my husband didn't hear it!!
Prison nearby.
Our son left a message to say he was ok,although sounded quite shaky. Gave us his prison number,so we can add money to his account, set up a prison voicemail account & most importantly arrange a visit. Been given a week away, but said husband couldn't attend because he wasn't on the list! Voice mail left.
Whole new phase now.

So glad you've now had a communication from your son.
I think it must be hard when making contact for the first time - perhaps the uncertainty of the response from loved ones and what's been happening on the outside. I'm sure that'll get easier.

I too am happy to hear you've had contact as I recall only too well how awful the wait is. EMates is also a useful way of maintaining contact. Receiving frequent emails really bolsters the spirits even if it's just the humdrum of daily life. I also wanted to add that it's normal and commonplace for them to be moved. My husband served 16 months and served in 3 prisons. Just be prepared in case this also occurs. I hope he stays somewhere that is easily accessible for you both to visit x
