Just wondering if anyone else has seen this story?

Met Police failing in almost all areas - as force 'not managing risks' of sex offenders and online child abusers | UK News | Sky News

The NFA stat contained within the article really shocked me. Either the Met are failing miserably in properly investigating men who ARE intentionally and repeatedly seeking out IIOC, or they are pursuing too many very poor or false leads and potentially causing a lot of unjust pain to people like us, or a bit of both. It also doesn't fit with people's experiences here, where NFAs seem rare. I'd love to know the stats for other forces.

For what its worth, I'd love for the situation I'm in to end in an NFA because he's been telling the truth, but not for him to just get off because the investigation is poor (and its been pretty terrible so far - the raid took my laptop and left his...I had to phone them up two hours after they left when I realised).

In the Met report , it says this.

"The force has a high-tech crime unit, whose officers and staff attend warrants if needed. We found that investigators have good access to this. However, officers and staff outside the OCSAE team don’t have access to a digital triage capability. This is needed to assess the level of offending that has taken place, the correct devices to submit to the digital forensic unit, and the risk of further offending posed by the suspect. This lack of capacity means that officers must guess which devices could have indecent images on them. They are also only allowed to submit two devices to the unit at one time. This increases the likelihood that investigative opportunities are being missed."

So they might be missing images that are there, or the images may simply have been deleted and cannot be recovered.

But on your question about other forces NFA rates, I'm sure you could find out with an FOI request.

Does anyone else know if this is the same rate across other forces? I imagine the met are a sort of figure head for the other forces in the country? If the met have all these resources and 60% i would think other forces would be simular?

Also what does this mean for outsourced devices??

Every force is different. You would have to do an FOI request to each one and specify outsourced devices only, to get that info.

Something else we know is that there has been a big increase in out of court disposals. The police attribute that to a large number of children being arrested for sexting and sending images of themselves to their peers.

It would be interesting to get an age breakdown of all those who were not charged.

I agree with edel - I think this is due to the high percentage of minors committing these offences.

I get the impression from this forum, if it's an adult offender, the police will do their upmost so that "they can for the kill".
