Hi all
For anyone that has time, as part of my police complaint, could you answer the following questions. I'm just trying to piece together what would help others in the future that go through similar / try stop reoffending early on and to see if it would help if information was given about stop it now & LFF early on.
I didn't find out about stop it now / LFF until my sons investigation was almost over and I believe had we been given the info / resources to get help earlier from here things would have been very different for us, for example it could have stopped the reoffending that's already happened as well as helping us feeling less isolated in what's happened.
anyway the questions:
1. How did your person / you find out about stop it now / The LFF and at what point in your persons investigation did you find your way here?
2. How many of your people/yourselves were informed about Stopitnow and LFF by the police after the initial knock / questioning.
if so how did the police let your person / you know about stopitnow & LFF and was it helpful?
3. How would you / your person have liked to find out about stop it now & the LFF? Would you have been less likely to trust stopitnow / LFF if the police gave you information about getting help and support from them?
4. Would it have helped you if the police gave your person and your family a leaflet / information early on into the process about stop it now & LFF at the point of the knock / questioning?
Thank you all. Xx

Hi!
We were left a leaflet for stop it now at the knock. I can't believe you weren't! That's really bad, did they leave you any support info/leaflets? X

Same for us they left me with a leaflet the morning of the knock
We weren't given anything at all by the Police and I only found out about LFF after speaking to a very good friend who is a former senior Probation Officer who advised me to contact them.
The Police knew that my son was a suicide risk because he had previously made an attempt to take his own life but they showed no concern either on the day of the knock or subsequently and actually told him " don't do anything silly because it creates extra paperwork for us "

We were given the LLF leaflet on the day of arrest
Mine may be a bit different but the knock was after I phoned them after finding content so 2 uniform officers on ititial visit rather than anyone from the online offending team.
When online offending team got in touch at arrest I wasn't given anything as the family however believe oh was given information about stop it now and other support.
I personally found this page after Google searches for support for myself after several months.

I was given a sheet of paper with the details of stop it now LFF on day of the knock, but was not told what was the paper as it was amongst the warrant etc which i did not feel upto looking at until days later. It would have been nice to have them signpost that on the day.
Thank you all.
I'll let you know asap the outcome

Same with us, we were given a leaflet which meant absolutely nothing to us at the time. I found LFF myself, first began reading posts then plucked up the courage to post.
A couple of the police showed a little compassion but now I realise it was false.

Hi, our first knock was 7 years ago. We definitely didn't any information about LF back then. Second knock came 2 1/2 years ago and again, nothing. I've had the police here numerous times but they've never mentioned LF or Stop So. My daughter found LF 7 years ago. X
I and my person were both were given A leaflet about LFF on the day of the knock. I passed details onto all our family who knew the situation. This charity and forum are a godsend.
what I believe would really help the impact on families is sorting out the long and complex process. It's the limbo and waiting and vast differences on sentences that causes most stress.
I wish that these offences were treated in a similar way to speeding (obviously it's much more serious but the motivation is similar the offenders don't think they'll get caught, it's really easy to offend, they incorrectly believe they've not hurt anyone and everyone does it). I think there should be more of a set penalty; everyone knows what it is, everyone is immediately cautioned, fined (quite a high one) and made to do a course to try rehabilitate/make them understand and prevent offending. They should then have all devices taken from them and destroyed and only be allowed another if it's locked down and monitored.
There should be a second phase that if a threshold is hit leads to the investigation and process we're all going through. This would raise more funds for counselling, rehabilitations (of victims and offenders), money to fund resources to remove the content and shut down the sites. It would also hopefully give the counselling right at the start where it's needed not after months or years of waiting.

Hello
I was given a leaflet on the day of the knock which had various numbers for different charities. The Stop it Now/LFF was actually pointed out and the officer marked the leaflet xxx

My partner told me about LFF as he was given a leaflet, but it wasn't until he sentenced and went to probation that I was informed of the forum.
I could be wrong but I don't think the forum was live back in 2018? But I felt so alone for two and half years. And we could have learned a lot about the SHPO and fight back more on unsuitable clauses.

Holding the grenade, I love this idea. It's so good and would probably be a lot more effective than the current system! X

I like your process.
My son was told about LFF after the first 'knock' in 2021. I used the helpline a lot, he did a bit & the contact was noted in court.

Dear Sunshine5, and all forum users,
Thank you for highlighting the lack of awareness of the helpline. We generally have support from Police who will give out our leaflets to suspects and their families when they first go to an address. However, we know that not all police officers are aware of the helpline. Sometimes this is because there is a dedicated online investigation team and if they do not attend the property it can be missed. However, we are keen to raise awareness and offer support as soon as possible. We have leaflets aimed at people under investigation, family members and young people (you can see them here https://www.stopitnow.org.uk/resources/). If we are aware of particular police forces that do not share these then we will try to make contact to raise awareness. It would be really helpful if you are able to email us the area you are in if you were not given our leaflets. It would also be helpful to know your relationship to the person under investigation, to make sure the police are aware of the support we can offer everyone.
Please take care of yourselves.
