I'm a bit confused if someone gets custodial if they get over 4 years do they have to go through parole before release?

I know someone who got 8 years for SO but only has to serve 4 and no parole. But then another who got 8 years but has to do two thirds and again no parole.

Why do some have to go through parole before release??

Hi, usually, a 4 years sentence means 2/3rds are spent in prison and the rest on probation. I guess parole could be added in but you'd know that at the sentencing hearing. I can only speak about England and I'm not really sure about the parole aspect. X

I think it depends on the crime itself. The more serious has to go through a parole hearing to consider public safety etc on release.

i could be wrong.

It's a confusing system because the terminology is not used consistently. At the half way point, or two thirds point, a person will be eligible for parole, but they are released under licence.

So that gives the misleading impression that they didn't go through the parole process, when they did. Released on licence means the same thing as released on parole.

Goodness me that's well confusing.

i couldn't understand why they were talking to my son about housing when he hadn't even been approved to be released by a parole board (?)
