Hi Everyone,

I know the best advice on this journey is to take one day at a time but in the spirit of trying to plan for the worst outcome, my person and I are thinking of self-employment options if charges are brought (he would definitely lose his current job).

Does anyone have any good news or positive stories on this front?

Your thoughts always really appreciated x

Hello,

Thank you for posting on the Family and Friends Forum, we understand that it is not easy to post on a forum about these difficult situations. I can see that you have not yet had a reply on your post, hopefully someone else in a similar situation can reply soon with some support.

If you haven't already done so, I would also encourage you to contact our Stop it Now helpline. The helpline is anonymous, confidential and free, on 0808 1000 900. One of our trained advisors will then be able to explore your situation in detail and provide some support and do their best to answer your questions. Our trained advisors deal with similar concerns to yours every day and will be able to talk these through with you and offer you the best advice we can.

I hope this has been helpful.

Take care,

Lucy

We haven't yet set up a business, but this is what my partner plans to do. When we've run ideas via VISOR and PO they've been supportive but need to ensure he is not breaking his SHPO. Therefore anything where he could be left unaccompanied with a child, even by chance, is a no. Things like manual work, electrician, plumber, window cleaner etc in houses will very likely be a no if your person has the SHPO of not being left unaccompanied with a child. I suspect even of there wasn't this clause, there would be concerns. Another issue I have seen is graphics and Web developers that may need to use cloud storage to transfer large files. We have a few ideas, but they are all just ideas and are 'faceless' businesses.

Hi

so my OH after he committed his first offence knew he probably wouldn't be able to get another job so he went self-employed as a handyman and appears to be managing it okay but if it's like during the school holidays and then maybe children about then he'll make an excuse leave the work he's doing and come home and rebook for another time when he thinks the children won't be there like term time, but apart from that, he doesn't seem to have had any issues with it. Hope this helps x

Thank you both, it's good to know there are possibilities.

Stan Cat, with your person, has probation been supportive of that. Does he have any contact restrictions in his SHPO? I've heard that they generally tell you to avoid those sorts of jobs entirely if you do have no contact with under-18s or under-16s as part of it.

Hey,

My OH is doing some construction training as part of his sentence - it's only 2 hours a week at the moment, as he's still waiting to be moved to a lesser restrictive prison (cat B to C). We have been told he will be able to do many more hours and different things once he moves.

There are things he would be able to do on building sites/outdoor gardening etc, but also, don't most SHPO and SOR restrictions state that they are allowed to spend time around children supervised as long as it's not for more than 12 hours at a time? Therefore, I can't see issues around handyman work, as nothing would take that long.

We are planning to try and aim more for buying property and him doing them up while empty, but I am aware not everyone is fortunate enough to be in a position to do the same.

x

Best of luck to your partner, Stressoutlady! Sounds like he's being very proactive. I think you are right about the specific terms of the SHPO. Some people on this forum report that the issue is often more with how visor etc interpret SHPO conditions. I've seen people post on this forum saying their person has tried to start a window-cleaning business etc and visor has steered them away from that in case there are any "accusations" made (peeping through a window etc). Obviously, having an unspent sentence and being on an SOR with someone throwing accusations at you could result in some quite unpleasant outcomes. Obviously, I think this is deeply detrimental to rehabiliation but it seems to be the state of things at the moment...

We're still at the under investigation stage of this journey but my OH was dismissed from his previous job when he was arrested. He is now self employed and works picking up and delivering cars to various locations. He is in the fortunate position that he has a small pension coming in each month which covers maybe 80% of his outgoings so the driving is topping up that. Although it's good to be earning as much as he can if he has a less busy month then it's not such an issue x

hi losingit

I don't think probation really had much input into how were he worked but the police were quite supportive and told him to take care and make sure he kept himself safe by ensuring that he wasn't around people with young children as it made him vulnerable apart from that I think it was just having to use his common sense as to where he worked and what jobs he took on xx
