What exactly are Rehabilitation Activity Days?

I quite often hear of people being given Rehabilitation Activity Days as part of their sentencing for various offences including IIOC. I am wondering, what do these rehabilitation days typically consist of? What is their purpose? Are they effective? I've not been able to find much information about them online.
From what I can understand from my son, Rehabilitation Activity Days are sessions where a particular activity is undertaken as agreed by a probation officer and their person to help the person in moving forward. For example, it might be a session developing a life map, or attending an external course. Some sentencing will say up to x amount of RAD days/hours so that the probation officer can put in as many or as few as they feel are needed.
I hope that helps.

My OH received 35 days of RAR as part of his sentence today. We'll probably find out more when he speaks to his probation officer next week x
