Hi all,

I think my person will loose his job. He works for BT only on the poles no entry to houses, school etc. BT have found out via the paper and suspended him as he didn't tell them even though police advised him not to tell them and they didn't feel like they needed disclosure.

Anyway my question is what are the employment options once on the register? Anyone have any positive stories?

Thank you

A lot of employment options will depend on the conditions of his SHPO if he has one. The no contact with under-18s can be interpretted very widely by the offender management team.

He might want to consider handing in his resignation before being dismissed if he thinks that is a likely outcome because at least then they can still provide references.

Thank you for your reply.

I think they can still decline to give a reference though even if you leave.

Will the offender management team help him find employment or is that up to him?

They can decline but often if there was no issue with his actual work they might at least offer one. I guess it depends how seriously they take the fact that he didn't mention anything until after sentencing and whether that is a breach of contract.

I think the management team signposts you to where to look for work but they aren't very proactive beyond that. I have heard of some probationary schemes whereby they might offer to pay to retrain the person, to get an HGV license or something like that. We aren't at this stage though so I'm probably not the most knowledgeable about it. Just basing this on what I've read of other people's experiences.

BT will terminate his contract as its in his contract to notify them if he is charged with an offence. Better he resign first. My person did get another job (less pay) and was lucky that he wasn't asked about any convictions. Not all companies ask so try not to worry too much x

Hi,

some probation officers can be helpful when someone is looking for work. There's also companies on ban the box although my partner has found that some still ask about unspent convictions. Asda don't ask anything but that's the only one my partner has applied for that doesn't xxx

I think in the long-run if it ends in a conviction for my OH we're going to have to consider some form of self-employment. It's daunting and not going to be easy at all but I imagine it's a far less humiliating process than running the "will I have to disclose" gauntlet for 5/10+ years. But I know probation can have their own opinions about that too.

It's been impossible for my ex to find work since, even with a first class degree.

To give a positive perspective, my OH resigned from his job just before sentencing. There was a clause in his contract saying he had to notify them of any charges or convictions - he decided he would rather leave with a reference than risk them finding out and dismissing him. He was fired from the job he was doing at the time of his arrest after his employer found out.

He is now a month past sentencing and is starting a new job on Monday, in the same field and similar pay. They didn't ask and he doesn't need to disclose.

Sarah,

would you mind messaging me the company please? Anywhere that doesn't ask is worth a shot xx
