My son has been on remand for 6 weeks. He had psychosis when he got arrested and is seriously ill. The courts wanted to send him to an MH unit, but there was none available, so they remanded him to prison. He is on the vulnerable unit. I only found out because I put a safeguard call out, and a nurse rang me back to say my son was very ill and was on suicide watch. It is 6 weeks later, and I still have not heard anything. I have rang everyone possible, even the prison Chaplain who went to check in on him today. He said he was very low and had been watched. They are stating he is still on suicide watch, is nonverbal now, and is still in deep psychosis. He has lost 3 stones in 7 weeks. I have only just been able to get money onto his canteen, but he is too ill to even use it. I have asked if there is anyone who can help him. I am just going around in circles..I feel like I am going insane. I can't function. My son was mentally ill when they arrested him; I don't even still know why or what he has been charged with, only what I have heard of his ex-girlfriend. He was too unwell to ple at crown court so the judge said he would be on remand for another eight months I don't think I can cope and I think my son will die from suicide if not taken to hospital.. it is torture.. absolute torture for all of us I need to post this in a new thread but don know how..please can you redirect it thank you

Copied and pasted from another thread as it was old and not getting attention

I am sorry to hear about your son.

I work for mental health but I am on here as my OH was arrested.

I think you need to talk to his solicitor/barrister, and medical team in the prison.

Ask what safeguarding procedure is put in place and who is assessing his mental health whilst he is in prison.

If he is on medication, see if you can find out if all his medication is being given to him.

Oh Jac my heart really goes out to you, what an awful situation for you to be in. Are you able to find the prison Governor's e-mail address and contact them with your concerns. It could be that your son is being well looked after by the prison healthcare staff but you need reassurance. The prison local to me will transfer people to the hospital if they are very concerned about their wellbeing or it could be that the prison have their own mental health team or in reach service.

Bless you - how awful. Like the ladies say, I'd pester at the top - the prison have a duty of care for your son and surely this is wrong to let him suffer like this.

The health care my son has received in prison overall has been very good generally.

Bless you x

Hi, I'm so sorry to hear about your son, how incredibly distressing this must be for you. The only thing I can think of is get in touch with Prisoners Families. They will be able to support you if nothing else and are very knowledgeable. Also, if you have the strength, get in touch with your MP. They should be able to put some pressure on somewhere to help get your son into hospital. I would think that Prisoners Families would be able to do this for you. X
