hello am new to here, I seen a lot of posts from people who are thrown into this world by a loved ones actions and the broken trust that comes with the arrest and investigation but I also seen lots of posts where people have found themselves in a corner of the internet by ignorance or by lack of awareness. but does anyone have experience in their person confessing something they came across online before or even without "the knock" ? Xx
Sorry no experience just advice.
if this is a genuine come across something by accident they will need to report it to the relevant site, report the account/webpage/user whatever via the processes on that platform and to "internet matters". They must make absolutely sure they do everything to get it taken down.
I would also ring the the helpline for their advice; they may be able to suggest whether in this case the right thing to do would also be to self report; however we know that people don't often do this; for fear of being investigated, shame or embarrassment or some don't even know that "coming across by accident" is still a crime. The LFF helpline may also be able to share some resources to help with the internet safety and ignorance element you mention. Unfortunately we all have shared experience of the trauma and damage this type of thing causes, never mind the poor primary victims.
I would also immediately check your internet and device settings to ensure you have the relevant restrictions on there and possibly up them or add extra filters if something has gotten through. They may also want to block the website or functionality in settings or delete the app/social media tool if it's sharing that kind of content you may want to consider not using it, if it's not safe enough to filter or prevent this type of thing being available.
