Hi all, it's been a few weeks now since our person self disclosed a download from late 2023 which he has now told us was a "zip" file of cartoon or "anime" pornography with these other "cartoon" pictures hidden inside.

we have listened to what our person has said and understand that the reason they wanted to self disclose was to prevent the "knock" which many of you all have experienced because he was scared that his actions would harm us at our home. He was also having nightmares that each day could be the one where he is visited by the police and was exhausted by his worries and "just wanted to know what his situation was."

I can't help but feel that our person has unnecessarily punished themselves by disclosing this incident that happened over a year ago, does anyone have experiences where the alleged offense took place more than a year prior to your investigations? He told us the only reason he became scared of repercussions was that he had seen a news article of a similar case a few months ago except this was someone who was a collector of this material

i know that question might seem irrelevant given the circumstances but I have been reading lots of posts on here where the time frames vary massively between the incident to arrest. I never imagined we would even be in a position where we needed to ask these questions.

That sounds like a really difficult situation. They have done the right thing, difficult though it is. Our knock came almost 4 years after the offending ceased.

I hope you are all getting the support you need

My ex started viewing images 2 years before the knock came. He also downloaded Cat A stuff that was hidden inside something else but he was convicted of downloading the Cat A images even though he didn't open the file. Sadly, he was sent to prison. Sounds like you're in a very difficult position. I'm so sorry. X

IP address flagged in August 2024, first knock attempted November 2024, arrest December 2024.

Hopeful Heart - did they say why it took two years from flagging to arrest?

I wonder if where you're based has anything to do with it?

I think there needs to be much more awareness around what a persons options are when they accidentally stumble on this material. I have seen the Safer Lives team recommend elsewhere that you should report it to the Internet Watch Foundation (keep a record of having done that) and then delete the material.

I'm only repeating what Safer Lives have written on Reddit, not suggesting that people who are actively searching for this material avoid justice.

I must be honest I never knew there was an ofilficial way to report things if you accidently came across it. I definitely think more needs to be done to protect those who accidentally come across it.

The reason it took so long was " because it came from an international source , which took some time before the UK police got notified of it " ?

My situation aside...

I'm not going to lie, I also personally did not know that when you see an indecent image you had to officially report it to police and I've just turned 40 years old ....then again I've never seen one.

I knew if something popped up you report/block it from the source it was on i.e instagram - tictok etc etc

Yeah guess like you if never had it pop up it's not something to be aware of. Problem these days they say your only one click away. On my phone galaxy s23 it's got that option where you press down I think and automatically searches. I did this whilst on home page of this site and it brought something up that was head of kids, I quickly came off it because was scared I'd accidentally clicked on something wrong. It did scare me.

Same Facebook, tiktok I know you can report stuff. My person whose 16 did actually report something on snapchat several times and one they accepted as violation.

It's a scary world online and more needs doing to protect children.

I was told that the 2 year gap was simply down to resources, not the severity.

26a20, do you mind sharing which part of the country you're based/the police force that dealt with your (or your OHs) case? I've heard a lot of police forces have made improvements over the last 1-2 years (apparently London has), so wondering if that might be why your person's case moved a bit quicker
