Why won't police give any information?

Reading others stories people seem to know what exactly they are being accused of in terms of number of images etc suspected on a device. I don't get why all we've been told is IP address and email address linked to iioc. No details of how, when or anything. We are just assuming it's October 2023 and snapchat from bits we picked up on but we could be wrong. Snapchat is where he reported violations that were accepted.
It's coming up to 6 months since the knock and I think I'm going through the overthinking stage. Wondering what the future holds for my 16yr old son. He's so many things he wants to do like travelling etc but with this hanging over us who knows if that will be possible. Feels like his life could be over before it's started and we have no idea the full reason behind it. It's impacting his A levels, his mood etc. I've work asking if I need any support but I don't want to disclose any of this to them.
If no images found we were told case closed but will we get any info then or will we be left wondering.

Hi,
We weren't told a lot either. Just something had been triggered several months before. But it wasn't the ip address, they asked for our 15 year old son by name...
We only found out more as our son told us what he had been looking at and has been quite open.
Our son told us he had been chatting to adults all over the world, so I'm wondering if that's how they found him by name.
It must be hard not knowing :(
Thinking of you x

Our son won't talk about it. Because our son had email address hacked the solicitor advised him to answer all questions which he did. He said he had accidentally clicked on links when searching music or video games. They were type of pop up warnings. He's intelligent in some ways but nieve in the dangers of just clicking, so if searching music he doesn't think first before clicking. But he is quick to report anything.
When we try talking to him he breaks down saying he's no idea what it is. He was petrified the day police came. They commented how scared he looked.
It just breaks my heart. I have my theories where this relates but I could be wrong.

Its quite normal for the police to have just an ip address and nothing else to go on. Until the devices are examined, they will not be able to say how many images were found.
It's truly the most horrific experience. What happened with my 15 year old is that the police told us that they had an allert from the IP address from 11 months earlier. They took his phone and did an initial basic analysis in the police station (they told us it was not sophisticated). They could obviously see that there was material of underage girls although it didn't look like many pictures. Mostly around his own age but there were some younger. He was then interviewed and then we waited for the phone to come back from the forensic unit.
That took just over 8 months and it came back with around 200 images/ videos - some of these can be files they've downloaded with images they're not interested in within them but if they're on the phone and they haven't reported them it's still a criminal offence.
I imagine in your situation Starr that they didn't find anything on the phone and are waiting for the results of forensics to see if they find anything. What's happening to you sounds very similar to something that happened you our neighbour / friend when their daughter was 13 they had the knock. They had to wait 8 months knowing nothing except that it was serious - both parents went through hell. Fortunately nothing was found on their daughters phone. It seems that a massive ammount of resource and energy is going into terrorising teens and their families. I completely agree that the phones should be taken and examined ( including for their own safeguarding) but criminalizing them and leaving families in terrifying situations is intolerable. The shame of this for boys going through such a sensitive period in their development and identity shaping must be so damaging (I don't even want to think about it).
I'm with you both x

apologies I meant to address the above message to A barely coping parent
Thank you Nickylara xx
Until I came on here I'd never heard of a search being done at the police station. We just got told the devices would be sent off for checking will take about 12 months, original bail conditions no unsupervised contact with under 16s. The bail conditions got dropped this month though.
My husband wants to put in a complaint about how the police have handled this though. Basically when they turned up it was like they didn't have a clue. Then when he spoke on phone and the police asked if my son was attending college and asked how he was, my husband said he's terrified, not really going out anymore to gym. (He never went out before though was and is always with us, we had just got him feeling okay stopping in house maybe 15mins on his own. Covid lockdown had big impact on him. Plus he never wanted friends at school because he was scared they would get him in trouble. He's always been the kid that reports stuff that is wrong and like I put he's reported snapchat).
If I disagree with something I stand my ground and feel like you this needs addressing higher up to how kids are treated in these cases, I agree they have to investigate but particularly when they have no concrete evidence at the start there needs a different avenue to cases that involve adults. Plus the length of time for devices checking is ridiculous.

On the day of the knock i was told nothing just that he was arrested on suspicion of iioc and it was left at rhat for a long time. A good few months until his second interview and then we was told they'd found the images. A few weeks before the knock his ex had messaged his sister and said tell him I'm going to ruin his life. We're still none the wiser how they found him , if it was anything to do with his ex or anything. it's something that's never been disclosed. Even when I did a Sarah's law and a claires law they wouldn't tell me they just said its 'confidential information' .. we're well past sentencing too.
We know exactly what we're facing because they already had evidence at the time of arrest, and the searches came back quickly after, my person also admitted to what they'd been doing. If your person doesn't know then either they genuinely haven't done anything, have no idea what they've done so it may have been accidental or nothing in it or are in denial.
Im hoping because of the impact it's having that it's the first instance and they don't actually have anything and won't find anything because there's nothing to find.
