It has been such a difficult 6 months and yet we are still no further forward.

We are still waiting for his case to be presented to CPS.

At present he is not allowed to live at home and because we have minors the changes of him being able to return are extremely slim, I am completely devastated. We have made the decision to start looking for a property to buy for him to live in.....

I suppose my question is if we buy a house (me and my husband would be named on mortgage but not living there) would there be any reason anyone could think of that would see him not being able to live in it?? I thought this would be a better option than him renting due to some letting agents weve looked at making it a little more difficult if he has to be on the SOR, I'm not sure if I'm just overthinking things or being paranoid but didn't want to go full force buying a 2nd property if he couldn't live there.

Any information would be gratefully received.

It's good that you have This option.
Im not sure if he gets an shpo if that could have restrictions on being close to certain places? Is it online offence only?

Hi, your son can reside in the property, however the mortgage company would expect this to be your main residence if a standard residential mortgage. You may want to look at building insurance requirements too. As the policy holder will not be in residence.

Good luck x

Could you buy to let? Then your son would be your tenant....plenty of people live in one home and own others as an investment so there must be mortgages for that kind of thing (he wouldn't have to actually pay you any rent of course).

Interested to follow this option, although our son won't be released until 2027. We are moving from our family home & may have to find somewhere near, but separate from us for our son.
He has no understanding of what he has put us through,or finds it too painful to address.

Yes. There will probably be restrictions eventually as to where he can live, such as not being allowed to live near a school, a playground etc. Also, you might want to look into buildings insurance and contents insurance as this could be problematic too.

I'm finding all of this so confusing, we live in a place where there are roughly 15 schools within a two mile radius apart from moving him up the mountain in a tent where on earth are they supposed to live? Does anyone have any idea of distance needed?

Hi,

not everyone's SHPO has restrictions around where they can live or visit. I'd recommend not buying a property that overlooks a school but other than that you should be ok xxx

Mummy to lots, it's all about risk and being able to live a "normal" life. Living within 100M of a school would be very different to living within 2 miles of one. Some things are unavoidable within reason and will be done on a case by case basis. The Police were "happy" for my ex to live a building where a handful of very young children lived, rather than be on the streets for example. If he was on the streets, it would be much harder for them to keep an eye on him. The Police also strongly approve of permanent and stable housing, even if that might mean that another piece of a SHPO is bent a little.

My son moved back in with us following his arrest and is still with us now over 3 years later. We live in the same road as our local school and have a constant trail of children passing the house before and after school but the location of the house has not been highlighted as an issue at all.

In the long term we are looking to rent a small chalet that family can use for holidays and my son for the rest of the time. It is in an area originally used for holiday accommodation but which is now mainly used for residential accommodation and again his ViSOR and probation officer have said it won't be an issue for him to live there.

Just to add, my son is post sentencing and has a 10 year SHPO and 10 year SOR.
