Hi,

Im just wondering if anyone knows if offenders post sentencing get special benefits from universal credit. My ex is telling me he'll get enough benefits to cover rent (£750) and bills and that he won't have to pay any council tax. None of this sounds right to me.

Thank you xx

Hi,

to the best of my knowledge there isn't a special type of benefit. It is based on individual circumstances. If he lives alone and is responsible for the rent and bills then he will get his rent paid or the majority of it and will get reductions to council tax meaning his universal credit or whatever benefits he is on will cover the portion left. I don't know many circumstances where council tax is reduced to nil for single people but it is usually reduced to a minimal amount each month xxx

They don't get anything "special" and the amount they will get depends on their particular circumstances. Its a complicated process. You could use a benefit calculator to see.

If he's single and over 25 he'll get £393 a month. He might get some of his rent paid but he'll find it a struggle.

Thank you, that's what I thought. He's not dealing with things and is just hiding in his flat. He's my ex so I'm limited as to how much I can help him. It's also very frustrating as he's not fulfilling any of his parental responsibilities leaving everything to me even though he created this situation. Such a struggle.

Much love to all.
