Remind me what happens when forensics are complete?

Our OIC called yesterday and told my husband he's applying for a 3 month extension for bail, and expects that to be enough. My husband's case is apparently 2 months behind schedule due to the forensic examiner being off sick. If the 3 months is accurate, that'll take us to June, ie 12 months from knock.
Can anyone talk to me about what happens next? I'm a (civil litigation) lawyer but cannot seem to retain information about this process or apply it to my own life - I think it's part of the trauma.
Will we hear from police before CPS decide on charges, eg with the forensics findings, via husband's solicitor?
or do we have to wait for CPS to review before we know how bad things are looking?
and how long was it between completed forensics and court, if your person pled guilty?
sending love and calm to all xx

Hi, in my persons case he got a call from OIC and asked him to come down for a second interview where they presented him with what they found from forensics. They then sent off to CPS and i think that took 4 months for CPS to come back with a decision to charge and then it was 1 month for the plea hearing where he pled guilty and then 3 months for sentencing x
Thanks Jellybean. How did charges compare to what your person told you after knock / what the police set out at second interview? Any nasty surprises?
The police didn't contact my son until they were ready to charge him. The OIC phoned my son to ask if he could go to the police station for an update, once there he was given his charges which were actually worse than he had expected. He was given a date for magistrates court which was 4 weeks later and from magistrates court was given the date for crown court.
Thanks Ocean.
When did SS get back in touch? Our case is 'closed' pending charges, with no unsupervised contact with anyone under 18 except in normal course of life etc, and he's allowed here (including overnight) subject to supervision (i guess by anyone who's aware of the investigation but that's not been said, so it's only been me and his parents supervising).
I'm guessing depending on the content of the forensic report SS may not wait for charges before reopening things?
We've managed to put a disguise on the 'elephant in the room', a sort of fancy hat and false nose, and got used to the exhausting but manageable reality of supervised access but no news. The kids just accept it as the 'what is'.
Now the elephant's disguise is slipping and it's going to start knocking things over soon. Sigh.

I probably don't need to say this and it's meant to be helpful, not being a doom merchant, but if the police say anything positive about time frames please don't believe it as fact. After over 2 years of comments to make it sound like things are speeding along nicely with our son's case if put on the spot, alongside many occasions of just ignoring a request for an update (from us, solicitor, social worker) we have become extremely cynical and assume that at grass roots level (ie OIC) they too have to wait ridiculous amounts of time or possibly are hugely overworked - but will never or rarely admit any of that to us so fob us off by saying something vague and hopeful to appease us in the moment. It really plays havoc with your emotional state and is so counter productive in the long run but seems to be how they often operate.
I really do hope that your 3 months expectation is right though. Already today there's a post on here praising the OIC so that is very encouraging to read. Huge hold ups are par for the course at the moment across all kinds of public services and we get that, but exaggerating or lying to those at the receiving end is the one thing amongst many that makes my BP rise the most and I just can't understand it.
But here i go again having a moan so fingers crossed you can post again saying your OIC was spot on with info Lisa as I hate disliking the police so much - my OH is a retired Police Officer so it doesn't sit easy with either of us to feel like this.

Hi,
in terms of ss getting back in touch it's usually after sentencing when they've closed the case prior to the investigation being completed. I hope this puts your mind at ease. In our case it was a phone call six weeks post sentencing to check I was aware of the outcome of sentencing and that the safety plan was working xxx

Thank you all.
In terms of scepticism I'm trying to keep a healthy level of that in terms of timeframes. Interestingly when I was told last week that my person's case was 2 months behind schedule, I felt relief - I wasn't expecting that feeling but it meant I could keep the disguise on the elephant a bit longer. Now 2 days later it sounds as though they're potentially making concrete progress it's a bit nerve wracking.
I've had a look through the local force's crime reports page and it looks as though late 2023 arrests for online offences were being sentenced in Dec and Jan, so about 15 months turnaround. Assuming 17 months for ours would mean sentencing before Christmas, if there's really only 2 months delay.

Hi,
SS got back in touch with me after charges, as the police seem to submit a new referral for every new thing that happens. I'm no contact and the kids too so they closed the case again, but did insist on going through everything with me to 'put me off any future contact' but I'm expecting another call after sentencing in a few weeks.

It's been a lively week, by which I mean hellish. Husband spiralling, reality is catching up, the OIC and forensics called him to check something about a particular file on his computer. I've been lurching between stoic for his sake/the kids' sake, and hysterical.
Holding it together for everyone is absolutely breaking me, and I've had some spectacularly awful days when the kids have been at school and I've worked from home. I cried for 5h straight on Friday, and when he came over i screamed at my husband so hard my throat went into spasm. Calmer by yesterday but still very much having to put on a brave face round the kids.
Glad to go into the office today.
Looks like OIC was being straight with us when he said final extension to June will be enough. I really hope it's sooner. June is already forever associated with the destruction of everything, but it's my little one's birthday month and her last birthday was ruined by the knock a couple of weeks before.
I now feel like I'm living a sham life, in this big house and steady financial situation which aren't 'real' and will imminently be vaporised. I want to take control and pull the trigger on it all now, but I'm being counselled by most friends / family to wait for the outcome of forensics.

Sorry to dredge this thread up again. OIC expects forensics to be complete by June. What actually happens in terms of how the second interview is organised?
We're booked to go away (UK) for a week in early April. If the OIC calls my husband and requests he attends to second interview, how much notice will he give? Will there be any flexibility eg to allow my husband to liaise with his solicitor to make sure they can attend too? Or will my husband hear about it via his solicitor, and will the solicitor set up the date and time?
Will the solicitor see what the police have found before the second interview? Or will it be an ambush on the day?
thank you all <3

Please don't apologise Lisa! Our son was called for a second interview twice (so I guess one was actually a third interview!) Officially they are voluntary but if declined then an arrest is possible. In both our cases there was a good bit of to and fro trying to find a date our son, the OIC and the solicitor were available so in one case it didn't happen for about 3 or 4 weeks because of this. Our son was part of the 'find a date' process and my initial worry (that when he said he couldn't do the suggested first date it would go against him and/or he'd be arrested) was unfounded. I can't remember who started the comms between them all to find a date, but guessing it was the OIC to the solicitor to our son.
The police told his solicitor what the score was in a conversation before our son went in himself and he was able to speak privately to the solicitor for advice first based on what the solicitor now knew, so no sudden surprises although also no time to prepare himself. Each time the advice given was to say 'no comment' which our son did and which makes me anxious despite the solicitor and my ex police officer husband assuring me is just what happens and has no bearing on the court hearing when it comes.
Hope that's a bit helpful - I'd say make the OIC and solicitor if you have one aware of your holiday dates so they know not to suggest the interview is during that time span (and you can refer to your communication about being away if they do suggest an unhelpful date so make sure it's an email and not just a phone call so you have a paper trail)
