Trying to keep this brief but bear with me! My son was given a 3 year community order for possession of images (around 30 across all cats), and 5 years SRO, no SHPO. He's 2 years into this. In the 4 years since arrest he managed to finish his degree and go on to get a Masters degree as well as doing some part-time retail-type work to fund his studies. He's been very supported by probation and offender managers who can see that he's ambitious and hardworking and is trying to put all this behind him.......however, he started a PhD a few months back and his new offender manager took it upon himself to call the university on my son's behalf and disclose his offence. He admitted that he hadn't read the file, didn't know any details and hadn't done a risk assessment but the net result is that the university have terminated my son's role. To say I'm angry is an understatement!

So my question is, what on earth does he do with his life now? If working hard and trying to put mistakes of the past behind you results in you being kicked back down to the ground, then what's the point? He's devastated, absolutely broken - he thought he was doing all the right things and was loving life. It's hard to see a way forward; his career path is quite niche and that's been taken away so where does he go from here?

I am so sorry that this has happened to your son, this must be a terrible blow for you all.

I hope you are able to navigate the 'what now' together so that your son can cultivate a new path for himself.

I feel really cross for you all that the new offending manager decided to take this course of action, when you son had worked so hard. If your son feels able to, I would put this in writing as a complaint as the previous offending manager was supportive of your son and then this new one comes in and changes it all in a 'flash' . I would be asking for the reasons in writing what justified this course of action.

I am thinking of you and your son.

Thank you Alison. I've filed a complaint with the Independent Police Complaints Commission after speaking to Unlock who confirmed that a risk assessment should have been done. It's so frustrating.

Hi Lola

I am so pleased to hear you have spoken to Unlock and have already lodged a complaint. The new offending officer needs to be made accountable for his actions.

Sending you and your son lots of strength to get through this and to map out a new path for his future.

Oh how absolutely awful, makes me feel like crying for you & your son. Poor lad trying so hard to move on and do well.

We are waiting for my grandsons sentencing this month, he was 17 at the time now 20 and hoping once this is over he can start to rebuild his life, which sadly he has tried to end several times, but when you hear awful things like this it makes you so downhearted.

I hope you Son can get over this and carry on his progression to acheive his dreams.
