Name & address change

Hello to all,
Unfortunately a new member here tonight, following 'the knock' 3 weeks ago for IIOC.
I have spent a lot of time recently reading so many posts, which have provided much needed information. Without all your questions & answers I would be very much in the dark.
I wonder if I might ask for one bit of advice from anyone who can help?
Although early days, I have decided to support my OH and look to try and rebuild our lives together when this is over.
My OH 'the person' and I both have very uncommon surnames, which are different and currently live at the same address. My main concern at this moment is just to plan ahead and find solutions to limit the damage in having his name and address published, when charged in the future and also court appearances. Apart from the obvious shame, I also have a job which would potentially be detrimental if anyone found out what has happened.
My thought is to change his name by deed poll and he has offered to move away until such time the court appearances have been made and dealt with in the hope that his new name and address would be reported in any press. Obviously he understands the need to inform the police etc. of all changes. He is not trying to evade dealing with the situation, but trying to spare me and his siblings.
Has anyone any experience of changing name at an early stage, prior to charges and moving away? His duty solicitor seemed to caution the move, but I can't see what he/we have to lose? Although one thought would be that it might look better in court if he lived with me and I could offer support.
Any help at all would be very much appreciated.

Hi, firstly I'd like to say hello and that I'm sorry you've found yourself joining us on here. You'll find some wonderful people here on the forum with a wealth of knowledge and experience.
I'm not able to help you with your question but didn't want to just scroll on by without commenting and letting you know that we're here for you.

I think alot depends on the address he was living at the time and where he was arrested.
Why did the solicitor think it was not a good move? LFF maybe able to help and Unlock are very good.

Thank you Ocean & Webb89.
The solicitor did not say in their email why they didn't like the idea.
I am hoping someone who has experience may still see me message and get in touch.
Thanks again.

Personally I wouldn't be too hasty - to move house and change names both a big step to take so early in your journey, though can understand your fears.
Weve got a very different surname, infact I've never come across another....... it'd be a hard one for someone to randomly spell. We still live at the same address too - It's not been a problem for us.
It's a thing you might want to consider in the future but I wouldn't rush into it.

I have had mixed experience with this.
OH moved out (we have kids) and changed name.
New address was reported rather than family home but both names were also in the press.
happy to DM about this if you'd like more detail

Thank you Smile through tears.
My concern is that my OH has a surname that is easily identifiable where we live due to places he has worked, so the worry is if it was reported by the media along with the arrest address it is likely what he has done would become known in the area.
If my OH were to change his name by deed poll and move to a different address further away then we were hoping any court appearance would be in a different county and therefore the media reports too.
I am really pleased to hear that you have had no problems. May I ask if your situation was reported in the press?

Thank you for taking the time to respond to my question LittleRobin3.
It won't be in my contract as my job isn't direct customer facing.
In the news reports I have read, I haven't personally seen more than one address reported, however it may be that most people don't change their name and address?
On a side note, I have read some of your posts and am sorry you find yourself here again. And I am sorry we are all here.
I understand what you mean about changing everything but I am concerned that it is something we could have tried and if we don't pursue this option it will be a regret later down the line.
I wish you all the best too.

Hi I know this is an old post, but did you change name? Our name is very different too, my OH is well known in our town and we could lose everything. Our child also gets badly bullied at school so if this was to be seen in media his mental health would suffer as a result. We are therefore looking into changing our name also. OH has been kicked out by SS so his temp address will be used. But if name goes out wont matter what address used .
This was my worry - very uncommon names and we were stuck in a position of not being able to sell the house until police had finished investigating.
luckily we never made press - everyone on street thinks I moved because we split up and I couldn't afford the mortgage alone! I sat in the court room and it was only me there, so I was praying it wouldn't make news as there was no reporters in. There was a huge trial going on that all of the press were in, but I was still worried it would make the news somehow. I can honestly say I don't know what I'd have done if it made the press.. especially the way my local paper does its headlines.. then they allow such awful comments
changing his name won't make a difference - they can report his old name.

I have just found an older post where name was changed and only new name was recorded as they got it changed before charged.
Can I ask the ones where rhe two names were printed was the name changed after charged or before?
Maybe there is hope?

I'm not sure sorry as I didn't know the person who I seen when they printed both. It was only when I was researching it and this was 8 years ago now
Hi everyone - I looked into a surname change when our son was first arrested as I was terrified about what could happen to him, his children and, if I'm honest, to us as he was living with us then. My imagination ran riot and not completely without reason, as we know from here that sometimes there are awful consequences and to know that it wasn't impossible was enough to make me have sleepless nights. Our son decided in the end not to go down that road as it seemed more likely to be pointless than not, and as he's a strapping adult and not a child, we couldn't force him. I felt that if there was a tiny chance it might spare us any trouble then it was worth doing but......hey ho!
I think it has to be done before charging to have a chance of an old name not being used and if it's been used at arrest then it will be on the police notes anyway, so quite likely to be used under the description of 'formerly known as' in court. Although sometimes it isn't and the person is only known by their new name. It does seem to be pot luck really. However it is fairly easy to do and you don't need to pay a solicitor a whole heap of money to do it for you either. Search on the Gov website for the info and a guide about what you need to do.
The original poster mentioned living out of the area where they were arrested ie in a different county, and seemed to think that is where their person would be attending court, so just to say that as far as we are aware the person has to go back to the court in the area where the arrest took place. Our son has had to go back to talk to the OIC and team a couple of times, over 200 miles away, and he has been informed his court hearings will all be local to that area too.

After speaking to solicitor they have advised against name change but OH has moved to another area. He has not been interviewed questioned or charged so my address should not be used. The solicitor has been very vague on the whole thing but I suppose they cant say much until they know whats happening.
All I need to do is protect my children. This is my number 1 priority and I will do whatever it takes. It is horrible for them too.

Hi, my son's marriage ended and he moved back home with me following his arrest. His ex wife, understandably, didn't want her address published in the media so my son made sure he informed the police very early on that he was living at my address and used that address on all correspondence to do with the case. When the time came and his case hit the media it was my address published with no mention of the address he was living at when he committed the offence or was arrested.
That was brave of you, Ocean. Was there any backlash?
No, fortunately there was no actual backlash. On hindsight though, I do think having the address he grew up in publicised meant many more people realised who he was. His surname is not unusual and most people wouldn't have known the address he and his wife lived at, so people may not have put 2 and 2 together.
I am glad that worked out ok Ocean.
My person's solicitor said only about 10% of cases are being reported in the press currently.... may we all be spared!

Hi all, thought I would just put our situation on here as it is current and relevant. We had exactly the same conundrum as my OH has an unusual name and we were so scared of media coverage affecting our business (self employed) and also our kids. Everyone knows everyone where we live.
The knock happened 3.5 years ago and it took over 3 years to even get to charges.
OH decided to change his name before charges, which so far has worked ok. We are between magistrates and crown court cases. At magistrates his old name didn't come up on the charge sheet and thankfully there was no media in court. This may backfire when we get to crown in a month though, watch this space!
The address change we thought about but didn't do, and with hindsight I am very glad, money being the main thing! It would have cost us a fortune. He would have had to have lived out of the family home for over 3 years and that would have been awful for us all. Also it would not have helped his recovery from the porn addiction. He has done so much to mend himself since the knock and I don't think that would have happened if he had moved out for over 3 years.
The other thing was that moving out would look like we had split up, and I think judges like to see a supportive family behind these offenders, as it helps so much with recovery.
Love to you all and so sorry you too are going through this
