There are a lot of factors that influence the charges. Like who was he talking to, police or vigilante group, or real child. Did he have any reason to believe they were older or knowingly chatted with someone he thought was a minor. What was said in the conversation and how long it went on for is a factor also. Where no real child is involved he could be charged with attempting to commit an offence whether that's grooming, sexual communication with a minor, inciting a minor to engage in sexual activity. I believe there can also be charges relating to exposing a minor to pornography and sexual images. You cannot guess what type of sentence because you do not know yet if he will be charged and what those charges are. Again many thing influence sentencing, theres no one size fits all for any crime. Until the police have all the evidence you cannot try to guess, you will drive yourself crazy. The cps website has the sentencing guidelines for most sexual offences but these are maximum sentence not average sentence so it can be scary to read and i dont think it says about sentencing guideline relating to attempting to commit an offence.
