My son was sentenced to 4 years 4 weeks ago yesterday... he has just moved from a cat b prison on the vp wing where he was settled to a cat c prison with no vp wing. He was extremely worried on Thursday when he got there because of being in the general population but he said its actually ok. He's just got to be careful people don't find out why he's there !

But this rant isn't really about him moving. His case hit the police fb page and news 2 weeks ago and we had just gotten over that when I got a phone call from his solicitor yesterday, saying the prosecution had emailed them because they were appealing his sentence as it was too lenient !! Our solicitor and barrister had said worst case 4 to 5 years and they were spot on. They are going to try and stop it before it gets to the court of appeal but I wonder how much this is going to cost me ! It really feels like the police are trying to make an example of him. What will they gain from this ? They already got their guy... do they have a little gold sticker chart in the station to see who get get the "best" results? It really feels like that with everything that has gone on. I know they're doing their job but this is too far...

Has anyone else gone through this ? What was the outcome? Who helps people who don't have a good solicitor?

I'm not telling my son. I'm hoping I won't have to as he's just getting settled. Sorry for the rant and thanks for reading x

Hi Hon x

Firstly I am so sorry to read your post xx

Has he been moved to a Cat C SO prison or is it a general population prison?

If Cat C SO they dont have VP wings and he will settle and get in to a routine

My son is currently in a SO Cat C andbhas been for almost 3 years

If there is any support I can help you with please feel free to message me xx

Unfortunately I dont have any advice on the prosecution part but surly if the judge sentenced your son to 4 then that's what his sentance is x

Hi thank you x

No it's a general population cat c not an so one. But he has been told not to worry as about 50% of people there are SO.

He's doing OK. But I think the thought of it on his first night really scared him.

I've heard if he has good reason he can request to be transferred. But for now he's going to see how things go x

I thought the judges decision was final but maybe not ????

Hi Hon x

They do adjust and get used to a routine, your son will settle

How are you ?

It's a huge adjustment, ask him to find out what work is available, training courses, education etc, it helps them to keep occupied x

You can set up email a prisoner, there is also video calls your son can set up once your number has been approved, are you able to visit? x

As Upset says it's SO important to keep occupied. My son has a job and on education (you receive a small income too), he also has numerous hobbies and regularly visits the library.

He said to keep busy is the best way to pass the time - if not it's easy to 'overthink', which can lead to depression.

Thank you. Yes he was waiting for work and education before he moved. As you know nothing moves fast.

We are doing surprisingly good tbh.

He calls every day and we were just about to have our first visit when he got transferred! We were also taking his first lot of clothes in... luckily names and numbers have carried over so I've requested a visit which will hopefully happen this week .

But they took most of his clothes away when he transferred and he's been told he cannot get a parcel till his bday. He and I thought they were joking. But after an email to pact it's true lol he might however be able to specially request some. You can't make it up can you ?

Also he's only allowed outside his cell for 1hr per day !! I'm hoping this is just a temporary lock down as he's had before or maybe just because it's the induction wing ?

That's not good. Staff shortages are often a lockdown cause.
