Hi there, has anyone had experience with reporting libellous posts on Facebook? I have ignore numerous posts at the time my husband was sentenced but today there was an allegation that could damage my professional position. The police said to report it to Facebook as it could be hard to prove who wrote it ( as people often use gake profiles.) I live in a very small community and woild be easily identified by association. Your advice will be appreciated.

Hi

when our son was convicted there were a lot of shares etc on Facebook. There were also a lot of comments about his dad and I as well as his sister. I have never used facebook but a lot of family did and do use it. At the time they tried everything to get it taken down with no luck, several people complained but it was not taken down. About a month after it all started the article suddenly disappeared never to be seen again. Why it disappeared we have no idea. Maybe they finally listened and took it down or maybe the person who originally put it up took it down. I don't know enough about Facebook to know how a post disappears. Does it automatically disappear if no one is speaking about it or does it have to be deleted by someone to disappear? We have no idea. I must say I. Glad now that I've never had Facebook as the added stress of Facebook would have made the situation ten times worse. In our sons case the article was originally shared 79 times but my daughter tells me the number will be much higher because more people would have shared after reading the original post. I still have no clue how this works x

Thank you. I just thought the police would at least check it out in stead of just assuming it is a fake profile. But I guess as we have learnt, we are on our own!

Ah Facebook, probably the most frustrating thing in the world. Everyone's lives revolve around it and being faceless folk think they can say anything.

I have had a lot of issues with it. There are "vigilante" groups who insist on posting details about any register offender. At one point I had my name, kids names, descriptions, address, car description and number plate, address and details of my husbands offence. It was posted, shared, sent to the people on the street I lived on, posted to the schools page. It was everywhere.

I contacted the police and was told that nothing could be done by them as it breaches freedom of speech!!! I was told the only thing to do was to report it through Facebook although I haven't had Facebook since my husbands offence was published in the papers. So I just had to leave it. The law works in strange ways, I was told the only way they could step in was if a specific threat to life was made. Such as "I am going to drive to their address and stab them". Other than that you just have to ignore it.

Sorry I cant help, it is awful you need to go through it x
