So annoyed and deflated again. On the news this morning that prisoners may be released at one third of sentence for good behaviour etc. But probably won't apply to sex offenders.

Do they not think some sex offenders can behave well and rehabilitate?? Seriously at a loss with all of this right now. Why yet again are our people not given this chance ?? The range of sex crimes is vast, surely the person and their crime is more important than the label of sex offender, throw away the key!

Sorry but needed to vent today, no wonder we feel our situations are hopeless and many of our people contemplate the unthinkable as the only way out.

Will see what happens when details of the review are released.

It's this new right wing govt, oh I mean this new Labour government, pandering to populism as we are seeing in so many other policy areas. The people that we all read about on here who get their news from, and form their opinions based on vile newspapers or fb pages will be delighted with the announcement.

They so need to look at the blanket crime and of this label it should be person centred

Exactly, the person should be looked at along with the actual index crime they've committed, the range of offences in sexual offending is huge and not all offenders carry out the worst offences within the range, yet everyone classes them to be the same and the media paints them all as monsters, and they live with the label for life .

If our people show remorse, acceptance of what they've done and change for the positive whilst in custody then they should be given the same chances of freedom as everyone else, it's so very wrong that again they're being excluded.

I was just about to add a post on this, yes I too was infuriated by this.

i too am sick of this sex offender umbrella - as said a sex offence covers a massive range/variety/severity of different actions. The prison gates are slammed firmly shut for them all just because a mere suggestion of early release would cause a public uproar....... and no one has the ..... to confront this issue.

im sure there are a lot of prisoners that could be released would prove to be far more dangerous than a sex offender keen on rehabilitation.

I've always said, prisons hold too many people that shouldn't even be there. Instead of building more prisons pump the money into the probation and support system after release. Building more is not solving the problem.

And while im on a rant, think it's spain(?) now focus on retraining and rehabilitation with their youth offenders - result, a massive reduction on reoffending!!!!! Look and learn.....

I was told by someone that to be classed as a P that you have to have so many (well into the thousands) images and have carried out the worst act, yet everyone is classed as one when they shouldn't be. I have heard a lot of people saying the legislation should be changed because making, sending, receiving and possession are one piece of legislation (in Scotland at least) yet not everyone has done all 4 or sometimes have only done one. So in court it's read out like you've done everything so people just assume the worst case.

Prison reform and early release are a political hot potato at the best of times, most in government would consider early release of sex offenders as political suicide.

Theres plenty of evidence that community-based punishments or a custodial system that truly focuses on rehabilitation such as the Scandinavian system is both more cost effective and results is massively reduced reoffending. But whilst most of the population just want prison to be about punishment nothing will change and any suggestion of a 'softer' sentencing system from a politician is an automatic vote loser.

Whenever I speak to people who have the hardline attitude to prisons i.e. no TV, no games consoles, 23 hour bang up etc I always ask if they would be happy living in those conditions, they invariably say they will never end up in prison as they will never break the law (which is bs of course who hasn't broken the law at some point) I then ask if they have a driving license if they say yes I point out that they are only one lapse in concentration away from a potential minimum two years inside for death by dangerous driving.

I too am sick and tired of the same pot/umbrella for all S.O's. How on earth can someone looking at an image (I know it's wrong) be treated the same as someone who has groomed or rxxxd on multiple occasions. It is so disproportionate with regards to the archaic sentencing guidelines etc. Yesterday I listened intensely to the public's comments who all seemed to be saying the same thing that the justice system is broken. One of these days we may get a government who can mend these broken departments the prison system, probation service, the NHS, the housing crisis, education etc etc etc.. and maybe one day we will get a government who brings terminology into the 21st century.
