I wanted to create a topic focussed solely on the KIK app as it seems a lot of people have faced 'the knock' recently due to this so will be good to see peoples situations and opinions.

My situation brief: knock happened last week, OH said he has used the app last year and deleted after use due to seeing how weird it is on there (I didn't know he had and never heard of the app prior to this) an image has been 'uploaded' from our IP address, he handed over his phone and pin so they didn't need to check any other devices (alarm bells for me - they knew what they was coming for) they arrested him because we have a child and he was released on conditional bail - can't come home. His phone was checked at the station and nothing found but still sent off for forensics. He swears he hasn't uploaded anything and is confident there is nothing on his phone but also is distraught saying he's scared he'll lose everything hmm (I want to believe him because my life has flipped upside down overnight but I don't feel confident as the intelligence has come from somehwhere in order to gain a warrant) SS is another story but want to keep it focused on the KIK app.

How many people are dealing with KIK related IIOC and how recent has it occurred? Has your person been honest? Do you believe your person? How do you end up in a group with IIOC? Has this been searched/intentionally seeked? Anyone on the other side who has an outcome to share related to the app?

According to one solicitor, Kik is responsible for 50% of all the IIOC cases they deal with.

It was an app that didnt require users to register either a phone number or an email address to create an account. That made it appear totally anonymous, but of course Kik could still find them all, using their ip address. They also scan all images that are uploaded, against the CAID database of known abuse images.

Thats probably why it has become the app where most men get caught. The other problem is that it is very easy to create spam and send links to lots of people, without them asking. Anyone with any sense would not click on these links, but clearly some men do, so when they say they didnt ask for IIOC that is kind of true. When someone is in the grip of a porn addiction, they are not thinking clearly. Most of the links are for legal porn, web cam sites and so on, but inevitably some will link to illegal images.

When it started Kik was a popular messaging app for teens, but nowadays it seems to attract mainly sex and porn addicts, who wrongly think it will protect their identity.

Inturmoil1974,

Thanks for sharing your update, my OH is adamant he hasn't done anything intentionally. He has hired a specialist solicitor, I'm not sure what to believe but only time will tell I guess.

edel2020,

it's frightening, and that's the thing whether they was seeking IIOC or not they was still stupid and curious enough to click a random link from a random person and not feel the need to report anything. I really think some people don't understand the severity of it.

Iaminshock - whilst the advice is that if you recieving images and links unintentionally you should report it to the police, I'm sure there have been occasions on here where that is exactly what has happened and it has still resulted in a prosecution and conviction, the offence is commited the second that data hits your computer. I can see why someone in this case would potentially ignore it and hope it wasn't followed up, afterall why give the police the rope to hang you with.

If kik disappeared tomorrow they'd just find somewhere else though. From everything I've read, anyone using kik knows perfectly well they're in a cesspit. There's a lot of nonconsensual voyeurism content on there too for example. I'm a 'kik widow' too, but I guess for me I just don't sympathise. You lie down with dogs you get fleas, as the old saying goes. The internet is saturated with limitless quantities of legal 'mainstream' porn if that's your bag - you really don't need to be on kik to get your jollies.

I agree, no reason to be in them spaces at all. The more I read on KIK, the more I just see how creepy it is.

Quite scary to think if you recieve something and report it you could still be convicted.

My brother's case involved KIK. But prior to that my experience of it was men I matched with on dating sites trying to get me to download it. Found out at least one of these was married but it was probably all of them. With so many legitimate platforms the only reason to use something so anonymous is if you are up to no good!

Sistersister,

Thanks for sharing. I've learnt so much from this thread and understanding KIK. Makes it almost impossible to stick besides the accused because regardless of the outcome of the case, something dodgey was going on and I'll always wonder if I truly know the extent of it. Such a shame for us left to deal with all the confusion.
