I did one for my ex OH and gave a character reference (I've known him 20+ years) and the implications it would have on my and my son. I explaied how he'd got in this awful situation and what he was doing to better himself.
I know it's a bit different but hope it helps.
you have to focus on them acknowledging what they have done and how and what they'll do going forward.

I did a character statement for my Ex and the solicitor told me not to mention his crime in anyway and just talk about his character as a husband and dad x

I was advised to make the character reference no longer than 1 side of A4 paper. I started by explaining who I was, my job role and the fact that I was aware of my sons charges. I explained the journey my son had been on since his arrest, the therapy he had completed and the LFF course he had done. I also explained the remorse he had felt. I outlined the fact his marriage had ended and he'd lost his family life, job and home as a result of his offending and I also said that I had and would continue to support him in his recovery.

My reference was factual rather than emotional and I avoided writing anything regarding the outcome of sentencing.

I got reporting restrictions via the Judge on the day of sentencing by getting the Judge to ensure my persons address wasn't mentioned by anyone in court therefore couldn't be reported.

Just write a basic character description. I really wouldn't put anything regarding sentencing or the effect it might have. Its pointless and some Judges don't take it well. Unfortunately, on the day it comes down to facts and the crimes. How we see our person and how we feel about them are almost irrelevant and the relevant stuff should be in the pre sentencing report.
