College enrolment after sentencing

I accompanied my son today to enrol at college and I'm so glad I did. When he first applied to the college he was still under investigation so was able to click on the no box for any convictions.
Today he had to tick yes, and while his tutor was opposite viewing a mirrored screen we had to type in offence IIOC. They handled it in a really kind and professional way but it was very stressful having to speak to the safeguarding lead about the details of the conviction etc.
They have accepted him on the course but have said it is on condition that his "probibitions" don't have anything in there around contact with under 16 year old children or people under 18. They are checking with probation about this as they couldn't just take our word.
My son is traumatised from his last college experience, he feels like they "kicked him out". The police informed them of his arrest and asked them to check their servers. Because they had "IT issues" they couldn't do this and assumed guilt as they couldn't confirm he hadn't viewed IIOC on their devices. This understandably caused a lot of extra anxiety today.
As awful as it was having to disclose everything, it feels like a relief that staff at the college already know everything and there's no what ifs to come later. Prior to conviction there was always the worry of restrictions on the SHPO meaning he'd be asked to leave another college. We've been waiting years for this to get to court, my son is nearly 21 years old and pretty much has had life on hold.
Thanks for taking the time to read my post and if anyone wants to ask any questions that I might be able to help with please do.

That is really positive to read, thank you so much for sharing.
Im not sure it would be the same for 6th form, due to younger children present. We still haven't had 2nd interview though, so will have a wait yet!
Hope the liaison with probation goes well xx
