Hello,

Is anyone still working in education even though a family member has been convicted of offences?

Thanks

Hello,

Yes, I'm a teacher. I had some time off work through choice when the knock happened but was never suspended or forced to do this. LADO was involved immediately but to ensure I was safe and my wellbeing was accounted for. They have a duty of care to employees as well as children.

The only things I have in place regarding my now husband (yes we have since got married at the blessing of all agencies involved with us, which is now only VISOR and probation) is that he is to have 0 access to any work devices (he never used them anyway) and he is not to come on school site.

Arrest was over 2 years ago, hubby will have been on SOR for 2 years this October and sentencing will be two years in December. Knock happened when I was in early pregnancy and I gave birth not long after sentencing. Social services closed with 0 restrictions 15 days after our baby's birth. I had my maternity leave and returned last September for the new academic year with no issues whatsoever.

Only the head in my school knows about the situation due to my right to privacy.

Thank you for your reply, it is very reassuring.

So far, I haven't shared anything about my persons arrest, this could come back and bite me.

Your answer is very much appreciated

Have you checked your contract of employment and code of professional standards?

Whilst I don't work in education so can't give an answer from that POV I do work in a healthcare job which involves regular, potentially unsupervised contact with children. Although my manager is fully aware of what is going on she did tell me that I was under no obligation to inform them about any of it, the only time I would have to inform them is if I was implicated in the investigation at any point.

Definitely check your contract and local policies as some have a clause about "anything that will bring the employer into disrepute" which is often a get out clause they can use for these type of things.

If/when they are charged if they still live with you it may come up on an enhanced DBS as someone on the household with an offence. Some forum users have had mixed experiences with this-so it might be worth checking with the OIC or again checking your work policies for what level is needed say if you went for a promotion or changes employers.
