The police come to our home every week to check my husband's devices (phone and Xbox) until his court date. That is fine. Today they came out and said they don't want him online at all, other than his Xbox. First time they came they said he's absolutely fine having social media. She checked his phone today and said "that's great. Nothing found. Keep doing what you're doing". Her reason for not wanting him on social media is because he watched gamer streams on Kick and Twitch. As she doesn't know what they are. It was explained to her.
we are currently on benefits and she said she told the DWP about his situation and stated if he taken off internet then he must report to the job centre daily to carry out job searches under job centre supervision.
she also stated that PayPal was used for transaction. This has NEVER been mentioned by the lawyer, or in the cyber report or at the court.
She also got the charge wrong (she said downloading. That isn't what the offence/charge is). Their attitude towards us was awful. Completely different to the first visit when they couldn't have been any nicer.
is this the norm?

That does seem a bit unusual. If they have a right to inspect that would have come from a Sexual Risk Order imposed by a Magistrate which should set out what he can and can't do and I would be surprised if it had such restrictions as banning internet use or PayPal. Anything beyond that is voluntary. If convicted he is likely to get a Sexual Harm Prevention Order which usually includes a requirement to have monitoring software on the phone or device which can often upload details of what he is looking at in real time . They often take screenshots and use AI to spot any potentially illegal images. This also massively reduces the need for police to come round so often.
HOWEVER in the absence of that software being on, all the officer sees is that he's been on Twitch, TikTok, Kik etc, with no evidence as to what he's been looking at on it. Similar with Snapchat, so I can see why she worries. Kik is notorious on this site for men offending on it.
In short the officer is probably demanding more than she can legally justify (check the SRO), but given she has legitimate concerns, it's probably better not to use Twitch, TikTok, Snapchat etc until after there is monitoring software installed (if he gets convicted).

Hi
Thanks for your reply. His court date isn't until next month. They are waiting for a background report from a criminal justice social worker before the judge make a decision (this is in the sheriff court Scotland)
At the moment he is on court bail and that states he can access the internet, including social media and chat apps, as long as they can see what he is watching. Kik is not used.
It is Kick and Twitch which are streaming platforms for gamers and DJs. All you can do on there is view.
She was just so rude and it made us feel uncomfortable.

My person was sentenced four weeks ago. He's had one visit so far. They checked his devices but no software monitoring has been put on any of his devices. Maybe that is to come but there was no mention of it.
The police were unable to put the software on my sons iPhone. Even though he is an adult I have parental control switched on for his phone and the police were happy with this instead.
Use of monitoring software is not automatic. It depends on the police force and what they have available. Usually an SHPO gives police the option to install it, but they may decide not to, for a variety of reasons.
