Vigilante Knock

Hi everyone.
We had a group of vigilantes knock on the door and my close male relative has been arrested and now on conditional bail.
I'm scared every time someone knocks in the door, or if I hear the gate go, or if I pull up in the car and someone is walking down the road I'm worried who they are and what they might do.
It was live streamed to thousands of people and the video has been shared on multiple platforms and groups. I keep checking the watch count, reading the comments and seeing it go up. It's only a matter of time before someone we know sees the video as the relative is named and the location is named and I'm so scared for that day.
I don't know whether it's best to take the bull by the horns and tell people or wait? My initial thoughts are that I want to wash my hands of this relative as I'm totally disgusted. I'm so scared about what's going to happen next and the implications this is going to have for me and my other family members. I don't know how I'm ever going to trust anyone again.

Hi Qwerty, I'm so sorry you find yourself on here. I am here for the same reason - Vigilantes but this was my Autistic Son who was stung - living with us at the time. I can only speak for myself but it was 2 yrs before I could watch the video and I couldn't face reading any of the comments. It was just too traumatic. In fact he is being sentenced this coming Friday (been postponed twice ) so hopefully it will go ahead. I will be coming off all social media for a time as I would rather not know what is said or commented on. We are just praying it doesn't get any exposure or very little. My emotions are just about broken after this whole experience I don't think I will ever be the same person again. My opinion of the criminal justice system in unprintable.
Good luck whatever you decide to do. We have only told a handful of trusted people who we care about and who truly care about us. Any negative views then we will never stop them but we don't have to know about them xx

I'm so sorry you're going through this.
This happened to us.
They targeted my other daughter's house and then his mum's house before he was finally arrested.
My daughter found out what he'd done on Facebook and it spread through the community.
I would be open and upfront with your family and friends as it's better to hear the truth from you rather than what they read online.

We have told the people that need to know. My mental health has taken a battering not helped by the fact that we have just found out that the sentence hearing due tomorrow is cancelled yet again , possibly Monday now but won't know until Friday teatime

Sorry for the wait in getting back to you both - I'm so sorry to hear of what you have both been through and are both continuing to go through as well - and Tulip, to have the vigilantes come knocking twice is just horrendous. This is earth shattering and life changing and so much to get your head around on its own, without then the additional trauma having it all over social media and the repercussions that come from that.

The relative is my biological father. I don't really know what the truth is and what to say to others either - he's a compulsive liar and so hearing all the evidence from the vigilante video was also weirdly helpful to know some of what he's done (which I fear is the tip of the iceberg) They'll have questions I just don't have answers to.
